In the 2016-17 season, mezzo soprano J’Nai Bridges (2008 Resident Artist) made debuts at San Francisco Opera and Bavarian State Opera as Bersi in Andrea Chénier, at Los Angeles Opera as Nefertiti in Akhnaten, and at Vancouver Opera as Sister Helen Prejean in Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking. In July, 2017, she sings a Beethoven's Ninth with Gustavo Dudemel and the LA Philharmonic and then heads to the Bravo Vail Festival with the NY Philharmonic before heading out to Munich's Bayerishe Statsoper to sing Bersi in Andrea Chénier.
2015 Resident Artist Andrew Harris’s fine basso-profundo qualities continue to impress audiences in Europe and America. Now in his fifth season with Deutsche Oper Berlin, he continues to add roles throughout the bass repertoire. Recent and upcoming assignments include: Roger Mortimer (Edward II), Titurel (Parsifal), Don Basillio, (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Tom (Un ballo in maschera), Masetto (Don Giovanni), Marcel (Les Huguenots) and Diégo (Vasco da Gama).
Auditions took place in 42 Districts and 12 Regions throughout the US and Canada. Two other Opera North Resident Artists, Jonathan Tetelman (2014 Resident Artist) and Andrew Surrena (2016 Resident Artist), were finalists in this year's competition. Congratulations to all!
Kyle van Schoonhoven (2014 Resident Artist) was a winner of the 2017 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. After months of local, regional and national competitions, nine finalists were selected for the Grand Finals of this prestigious competition. At the March gala, Kyle performed “Steady! There you are! Nearly home!” (Grimes’s Mad Scene) from Peter Grimes (Britten) and “Allmächt’ger Vater, blick herab!” (Rienzi’s Prayer) from Rienzi (Wagner) at The Metropolitan Opera and was selected as one of six winners.
Sandra Lopez, (on left) who thrilled audiences as Tosca in Tosca (2016), was recently at the Sarasota Opera as Blanche in Dialogue with the Carmelites.
Arianna Rosario, who was red hot as Anita in West Side Story (2015), is now playing Sillibub in Cats the Musical on Broadway.
Former Resident Artists Javier Ortiz (2014) and Tyler Putnam (2013) along with Candace Lynn Matthews, who played Maria in West Side Story (2015), will star in an adaptation of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, entitled ¡Figaro! (90210) playing at the Hopkins Center at Dartmouth.
Todd Thomas, who sang roles for the company including Count di Luna in Il trovatore (2008), Scarpia in Tosca (2005) and Giorgio Germont in La Traviata (2003), is performing Scarpia in the Sarasota Opera production of Tosca. Resident Artist Trevor Neal is his cover.

Tyler Putman returned to Sarasota Opera to sing the Monk in Don Carlos and the Jailer in Tosca.
Resident Artist Dane Suarez is covering Alfredo in the Fort Worth Opera production of La Traviata and will be singing Marcellus in the company’s upcoming production of Hamlet.
Amanda Woodbury will be performing Tebaldo in Don Carlos at the MET in March. She will perform the role of Konstanza in Die Entfühung aus dem Derail at Des Moines Metro Opera this summer, and will be Musetta in La Bohéme at the LA Opera in 2016.
Kara Shay Thompson and Alexandra Batsios are performing at Sarasota Opera in upcoming productions. Kara will be performing the title role of Tosca and Alexandra is performing the role of Queen Shemakha in The Golden Cockerel. Read a review of The Golden Cockerel here.
