Don Giovanni is set in Spain in the 1600’s. Don Giovanni, a libertine, is assisted by his long-suffering servant, Leporello, in his campaign of seduction and dissolution. He is brought down by his final encounters with three women: Donna Elvira (a former lover, now discarded, who still loves him); Donna Anna (a young noblewoman he has attempted to seduce and whose father, the Commendatore, he has killed) and Zerlina (a young girl engaged to the peasant Masetto.) All three women vow vengeance on the Don, but he is finally vanquished and dragged down to hell by the cemetery statue of Donna Anna’s father, the Commendatore, who has accepted the Don’s invitation to dinner.
