The Ballad of Baby Doe, the sweep of the American West and the Gilded Age come together in this passionate story of gold, silver, Colorado miners and the love triangle of Horace Tabor, his wife Augusta and Baby Doe.
This stirring American opera by Douglas Moore and John Latouche brings a chapter of American history to the stage as we celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday. Based on the lives of historical figures Horace Tabor, a wealthy mine owner; his wife Augusta Tabor, and the beguiling Elizabeth “Baby Doe” Tabor, we journey through their lives from the moment of Horace and Baby Doe's meeting to his death. The opera premiered on July 7, 1956 but holds its timeless appeal – the rise and fall of riches, virtue and the American economy (where else will you find arias about the Silver and Gold Standards?) – 70 years later.
