Cenerentola (Cinderella) Rossini's fanciful and comedic take on the timeless fairy tale of wishes and romantic dreams, where cruel stepsisters are answered with the delicate steps of glass slippers and virtuoso musical fireworks.
The story of Cinderella is so popular it is found in thousands of folk tale variations from Ancient Greece to China to the 1950 Disney movie. Yet it seems the essence of the “happily-ever-after” journey from wronged into right. Rossini chose to focus on the “ash girl” whose beauty and nobility were hidden even by her stepfather, “Don Magnifico.” No glass slipper, no fairy godmother. No mice or pumpkin coaches. Instead, “Goodness Triumphant” as the subtitle proclaims, wins the prince. Inspired in December 1816, completed in just three weeks, and considered to have some of Rossini’s finest writing for solo voice and ensembles, Cenerentola is the opera for the times, 210 years later. Come journey into this “Cinderella Season” with Opera North.
